Deputy President of Kenya, Kithure Kindiki, has embarked on his first official foreign assignment, representing President William Ruto at the inauguration of Duma Boko as the new President of Botswana. Kindiki departed from Kenya this morning for Gaborone, where he is attending the swearing-in ceremony of Botswana’s sixth president.

In a statement issued ahead of his departure, Kindiki confirmed, “I left the country this morning for Gaborone, Botswana, to represent President William Samoei Ruto, at the swearing-in and inauguration ceremony of His Excellency Duma Boko as President of the Republic of Botswana.” The event marks a significant political shift in Botswana, as Boko, leader of the opposition, defeated the long-ruling Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) in a surprise electoral outcome.

The inauguration ceremony, scheduled to take place at the High Court, will be presided over by Chief Justice Terrence Rannowane. Duma Boko’s victory comes after a historic election, where outgoing President Mokgweetsi Masisi conceded defeat to the opposition leader. In a farewell message posted on social media, Masisi announced, “From tomorrow, I will start the process of handover,” signaling a peaceful transfer of power to his successor.

Kenya’s Deputy President is accompanied by a delegation of Kenyan lawmakers, including Senators Fatuma Dullo and Eddy Oketch, and Members of Parliament Owen Baya, Vincent Musyoka, John Njuguna Kawanjiku, Victor Koech, and Elisha Odhiambo. This high-profile delegation underscores the importance of the relationship between Kenya and Botswana, as both nations strengthen ties on the African continent.

As Kindiki participates in this historic moment in Botswana’s political landscape, his presence underscores Kenya’s support for the democratic processes in the region, as well as its commitment to fostering positive diplomatic relations with Botswana’s new administration.

The inauguration of Duma Boko, a pivotal event in Botswana’s political history, marks the end of a long period of dominance by the Botswana Democratic Party, ushering in a new era of leadership in the southern African country.
