In a recent discussion on Gukena FM, Dr. Ekrah Ndungu, Chairperson of the Kenya National Association of Private Colleges (KENAPCO), emphasized the urgent need to align educational curricula with market demands to combat the growing skills mismatch in Kenya.

This initiative, driven by affiliate colleges, aims to ensure that graduates possess the skills necessary for today’s job market.

Dr. Ekrah pointed out that many graduates struggle to secure employment due to a disconnect between their training and the needs of employers. “Private Technical and Vocational Education and Training institutions are stepping into this gap by developing relevant curricula that address these challenges,” she stated.

Several KENAPCO member institutions have taken the lead in this effort. Notable examples include the Kenya Institute of Social Work and Development (KISWD), which has developed a curriculum for social work, and Amani Counselling & Training Institute, which offers specialized counselling courses. Vera Beauty College has also introduced programs in cosmetology, among other private TVETs committed to advancing quality education and training.

Dr. Ekrah reiterated the association’s commitment to producing a highly skilled workforce that meets the requirements of a rapidly industrializing economy, in line with Kenya’s Vision 2030. “We must ensure that the skills offered are not only marketable but also relevant to current industry needs,” she added.

The Chairperson highlighted the negative implications of the skills mismatch, which can hinder economic growth, productivity, and competitiveness. To counter this, KENAPCO plans to foster collaboration among educational institutions, industries, and policymakers to create a responsive education and training system.

By prioritizing the development of dynamic curricula and frameworks that reflect industry needs, KENAPCO aims to enhance employability and maximize the socio-economic returns on human capital investment, paving the way for a more competitive and adaptive workforce in Kenya.
