Eldoret: 5 Buildings to be Demolished

At least more than five commercial buildings in Eldoret town and its environs worth millions of shillings that have been constructed on drainage lines and those that stand on public spaces are set for demolition.

Eldoret Municipal board chairman Julius Kitur said the drastic measure by the board was meant to avert a looming danger ahead of the county being granted city status next year.

Kitur has consequently ordered owners of buildings within the town’s central business district which are currently under construction to halt projects after it emerged that they were unsafe.

He was speaking to the media after a tour of some of the buildings targeted for demolition in the town while accompanied by Tito Koiyet the municipal board manager.

The team from the municipal board led by Kitur was shocked to learn that the affected two storey building owned by Fims Limited stood directly on a drainage line.

He asked the company management to stop with immediate effect the ongoing construction work on the piece of land which they claimed belongs to the county government of Uasin Gishu.

“As you can all see, this structure stands on a drainage line and the county will not allow the construction work to continue because this is a public utility space,” said Kitur.

The Uasin Gishu County assembly leader of Minority and Langas ward MCA Francis Muya har raised an alarm over two months ago over the illegal construction at Eldoret block 6 a matter that is currently before the assembly.

“This parcel of land is a service lane and a public utility , we do not understand under what circumstances the developer had approvals to construct a building on the service lane , we must get to the bottom of this matter and those involved will be held responsible”He warned.

The County assembly last week had to send away unceremoniously the CEC incharge of lands after he failed to appear before the house accompanied by the Chief officer Physical planning .

The Chief officer is said to have been side lined in the approval of the some of the ongoing illegal constructions .

Eldoret municipality board manager Tito Koiyet has said that the board had already mapped out illegal structures and unapproved developments that are now on the line of being brought down .
