Eldoret’s Transition from Municipality to City: A Call for Reform and Unity
By Zedekiah Bundotich (Buzeki)
Eldoret’s ascension from a town to a city represents both a momentous achievement and a critical juncture in its history. As we embrace this new status, it is crucial to confront the pressing issues that have marred our journey, particularly those arising from the repeated election of corrupt and ineffective leaders.
Eldoret’s elevation to city status should not be merely a cause for celebration but a powerful call to action. The city’s past leaders have significantly downgraded our socioeconomic standing through mismanagement and corruption. Their failures have overshadowed Eldoret’s potential and left a legacy of division and inefficiency.
Historically celebrated for its agricultural prowess and business diversity, Eldoret is now unfortunately associated with tribalism and discrimination. This troubling trend has been exacerbated by leaders who have prioritized their personal gain over the welfare of the broader community. Tribalism, an insidious force, has infiltrated our political landscape, stifling progress and deepening divisions among residents.
The current administration, led by figures such as Mandago and Koti Moja, has perpetuated this cycle of corruption and mismanagement. Reports indicate that public resources have been mishandled, and funds meant for essential programs, like the Finland education initiative, were diverted to finance political campaigns. Such actions undermine trust in our governance structures and hinder our city’s advancement.
Moreover, the exploitation of tribal affiliations for political gain has marginalized various clans and communities within Uasin Gishu County. Leaders have weaponized these affiliations, creating an environment of intimidation and coercion that suppresses dissent and accountability.
The use of cultural songs and other intimidation tactics to silence opposition reflects a disturbing trend that must be addressed. For Eldoret to realize its full potential, we must dismantle the barriers of tribalism and corruption that impede growth and prosperity.
It is imperative that we usher in a new era of leadership characterized by unity, integrity, and inclusion. This shift is essential for Eldoret to flourish as a vibrant, diverse city. Embracing these principles will not only improve governance but also ensure that Eldoret stands as a beacon of opportunity and excellence in Kenya.
As Eldoret embarks on this transformative journey, let us seize this pivotal moment to foster a united and prosperous city. By committing collectively to a vision of inclusivity and progress, we can build a brighter future for all residents and secure Eldoret’s place as a leader in development and diversity.
Eldoret must embrace its diversity or risk falling behind as capital and opportunities shift to other regions. The time for change is now.
