County Executive Committee Member for Education Dr. Janeth Kosgei on Wednesday joined other stakeholders during the launch of the annual Eldoret Regional book fair.

Speaking during the opening of the fair, Dr Kosgei challenged publishers to ensure textbooks they produce are fit for pupils.

“All the books issued in the schools should be written in a simple language for the learners to clearly understand the content,” Kosgei said.

She also emphasized the need for evolution in E-learning pointing out the ongoing digitalization in the book industry hence the need for learners to use the library available to read.

On his part, the chairperson of the Kenya Publishers Association, Kiarie Kamau said they have been working on ensuring textbooks for Junior secondary schools are availed in the bookshops.

He noted that the books will be available across the country by the end of the year.

However, Kiarie said they have since facilitated the government in ensuring every school has sufficient textbooks for learners despite earlier challenges that they faced with a change in curriculum.

“Every new system comes with challenges but today we have been able to publish books and distributed them to public schools and each pupil has a book in 1:1 ratio. For private schools we sold the books to them last December,” he said.

Director of Education, Uasin Gishu County, Issack Khalif Hassan was also present during the event.

He called on Publishers only to sell books approved by KICD.

“All the books which go through our children should come through KICD,” Khalif said.
