The Ford Foundation has issued a robust denial of accusations made by President William Ruto, who alleged that the organization was funding recent anti-finance bill protests in Kenya. The President’s comments had linked the demonstrations to the U.S.-based philanthropic organization, sparking a heated political controversy.

In a statement released shortly after President Ruto’s address, the Ford Foundation clarified that it had no involvement in the protests against the government’s finance bill. The foundation underscored its commitment to democratic values and affirmed that it does not support violence or unrest.

“We retain an ongoing commitment to supporting work in support of Kenyan development and Kenya’s leadership on the African and global stage,” the Ford Foundation stated. “We do not sponsor or fund the recent protests against the finance bill, and we have a strictly non-partisan policy for all our grant-making.”

The President’s remarks suggested that the Ford Foundation had been financing the protests, which have recently drawn significant public attention. The Ford Foundation rejected these allegations, emphasizing that while they support democratic processes and the right to peaceful protest, they do not endorse or fund activities that lead to violence or hatred.

The foundation’s statement also reaffirmed their respect for the governments of East Africa and their adherence to legal and ethical standards in all their operations.

“The Ford Foundation believes in democracy and supports the right of people to express their views through peaceful and lawful means,” the statement continued. “However, we discourage any form of hateful speech or actions that could incite violence against institutions or communities.”

This denial comes at a time of heightened political tension in Kenya, as the country grapples with the implications of the controversial finance bill. The Ford Foundation, known for its global philanthropic efforts, has emphasized its role as a neutral and supportive partner in Kenya’s development and democratic processes.
