Golden Goals Propel Busia to Victory, Basketball Team Displays Grit

Despite inclement weather conditions in Malindi, the Busia County Under 23 soccer team showcased unwavering determination and skill at the ongoing Kenya Youths Intercounty Sports Association (KYISA) games, bringing honor to their county with a stellar performance.

In a thrilling match that captivated spectators at Alaskan Stadium, Busia County triumphed over Vihiga County with a resounding 3-1 victory. Billy Barasa set the tone with a goal in the 20th minute, followed by John Junior’s strike in the 57th minute, and another goal from Barasa in the 66th minute, sealing the win for Busia.

Undeterred by the challenge, the Busia champions continued their winning streak in the subsequent match against Lamu, securing a decisive 3-0 victory and securing their spot in the quarter-finals. Their impressive performance on the field has bolstered hopes for further success in the tournament.

In basketball, despite a valiant effort, Busia’s girls faced a narrow defeat against Makueni with a final score of 20-17. However, their spirited display underscores the team’s resilience and determination to compete at the highest level.

Looking ahead, Busia County anticipates a crucial match against Kilifi, a game that will determine their fate in advancing to the semifinals. Chief Officer of the Department of Sports, Youth Affairs, and Gender, Dennis Ngira, commended the teams for their outstanding performance and expressed confidence in their ability to excel.

“We faced challenges at the start, but the teams have shown remarkable progress. We believe they will bring home the best results,” remarked Ngira, highlighting the optimism surrounding Busia’s participation in the tournament.

Ngira was joined by a host of officials including Director of Sports, Jerry Nyongesa, Director of Youth, Meshack Tumaini, Deputy Director of Sports, Milka Etukuri, as well as Sports Officials Margaret Oduma and Robert Endire, among others, in rallying support for the teams.
