Governor Barasa Launches the Construction of a Fertilizer Manufacturing Plant in Kakamega

Kakamega County Governor Fernandes Barasa accompanied by the US Amb. to Kenya H.E Margaret Whitman, Wednesday presided over the launch of Kakamega County Organic Fertilizer Manufacturing Plant at Matawa Industrial Park in Mumias West Sub-County, setting the stage for commencement of construction of the Shs 1.2 Billion Plant in Kakamega County, the second one of its kind in Kenya, to be established by Regen Organics Limited, a US Company.

In his speech, the Governor stated that the Plant will create thousands of jobs for Kakamega residents both directly and indirectly, spur economic growth, create wealth among residents and advance the food security agenda by providing subsidised fertilizer to farmers.

Apart from organic fertilizer, Regen Organics also manufacturers the black soldier fly which converts organic waste into high-quality nutrients for pet foods, fish and poultry feeds as well as briquettes for powering factories which use organic boilers and steamers.

The Governor who recently launched the third generation County Integrated Development Plan (CIDP) reiterated that the County Budget has a resource gap of Shs 41.5 Billion and implored the US Government and other willing Partners to fill the gap to ensure a smooth implementation of his Manifesto.

H.E Ms Margaret Whitman, the US Ambassador said the partnership between the County and Regen Organics will be a catalyst for further economic activities and investment between the two – Kakamega County and USA.

Deputy Governor H.E Ayub Savula on his part noted that in addition to the project, Governor Barasa’s administration will implement the County’s development agenda as outlined in the elaborate CIDP 2023-2027.

Regen Organics Managing Director Mr Michael Lwoyelo noted that the factory will solve challenges related to organic waste and significantly increase farmers yields for their various food crops such as maize, sugarcane and rice among others.

The County Government through Kakamega County Investment Development Agency (KCIDA) has stepped up investment promotion initiatives aimed at attracting investors to Kakamega County.

The event was also attended by the Governor of Vihiga County H.E. Dr. Wilberforce Ottichilo, Speaker of the County Assembly of Kakamega Rt. Hon. James Namatsi and County Executives among other important guests.
