Governor Bii’s Administration Intensifies Fight Against Illegal Liquor
The Uasin Gishu County government has intensified the fight against illegal liquor.
According to Governor Jonathan Bii thousands of liters of Chang’aa, Busaa, and Kangara brew has brew netted and destroyed in the last few months.
Speaking during Madaraka day Celebrations held at Ainabtich primary school Moiben constituency, Bii said the County is taking an initiative in seizing illicit brews and arresting those involved.
“We are very proud as a Uasin Gishu County because so far in the recent few months we have managed to save our youths from consuming these illicit brews by arresting the people who are in possession of the illicit brews and taking them to court.” Uasin Gishu Governor said.
According to Bii the County has confiscated approximately 5700 liters of Chang’aa, 63000 litres of Kangara, and close to 9000 litres of Busaa with the help of the County enforcement officer.
He called upon bar owners to follow the rules of not operating less than 300 meters from educational institutions and warning those operating within estates that they will be arrested and their licenses confiscated.
“Most of the bar owners are following the regulations given by the County on how they should operate but for those who will be found going against the law their licenses will be taken back “he added
He further noted that all bars around town should be closed by 11 Pm or else the owners will be arrested and arraigned in court.
” All bars around the town should be closed by 11 pm at night for those who will operate past that time will be at risk of being arrested and taken to the court to face the law.” Said the County boss.
Uasin Gishu Director of Alcoholic Drinks and Licensing Board Koiya Arap Maiyo also put on notice those entertainment joints near residential and Public Institutions.
He added that those bars which are not licensed should do so as they will be charged with breaking the law.
“We have issued 805 licenses so far which accounts for 80% of the people who applied for them and the remaining 20% will soon receive theirs after complying with our regulations, ” added Uasin Gishu Director of Alcoholic Drinks and Licensing Board.
The County Government leadership is undertaking the crackdown in all trading centers and residential areas in a bid to create an enabling environment safe for children as well as ensure that the licensed clubs also sell legal drinks approved by the Kenya Bureau of Standards (KeBS).
