Governor George Natembeya has called on residents of Machewa to actively engage in government programs aimed at boosting the local economy. Speaking at a public event on Thursday, Natembeya highlighted the importance of community participation in government initiatives, stressing that a lack of awareness about available opportunities has hindered the circulation of money at the grassroots level.

“When money circulates properly, businesses thrive and individuals are empowered to apply for opportunities independently,” Natembeya said, urging locals to tap into government resources and collaborate with local authorities.

A key initiative the Governor emphasized is the KSh. 100 million allocated to the *Nawiri Fund*, which is intended to support local entrepreneurs and small businesses. The fund is part of a broader effort to stimulate economic growth within the region and create sustainable livelihoods for residents. Natembeya encouraged business owners, especially small and medium enterprises (SMEs), to apply for grants and loans from the Nawiri Fund, which he described as a “critical resource” for advancing local entrepreneurship.

During his address, Natembeya also spoke on the importance of transparency and ethics in government procurement. He urged local suppliers to submit accurate quotations during the tendering process, ensuring they maintain fair practices while also securing profits.

“We want to see suppliers doing the right thing by submitting fair quotations. While we encourage them to make a profit, unethical practices driven by greed will only harm our collective progress,” the Governor cautioned.

In a bid to further support the local economy, Natembeya unveiled plans to establish a chicken slaughterhouse in the region. He encouraged residents to explore poultry farming, assuring them that there would be a reliable market for their products once the slaughterhouse is operational.

“This project will open up opportunities for local farmers to increase their productivity, as we will ensure a ready market for their poultry,” Natembeya said. The slaughterhouse is part of the Governor’s broader strategy to boost local agriculture, create jobs, and improve the economic well-being of Machewa residents.

The event was attended by various county officials, including Saboti MCA Boniface Cheloti, area MCA Kisiang’ani Wambwa, Trade CEC Patrick Gacheru, and Nawiri Fund Chairperson Martin Waliaula. Also present were Dr. Felix Sialo, the county’s Communications Director, and Dr. Scholasticah Nalobile, the Director of Trade.

As the region looks to improve economic opportunities for its residents, Governor Natembeya’s message was clear: the key to sustainable growth lies in active community involvement, ethical business practices, and effective utilization of government resources.
