Governor Natembeya’s Government Wants Head Count
The county government of Trans Nzoia has today initiated a three-day head count exercise for casual workers in the health department.
The aim of this exercise is to formalize the employment status of these workers and comply with Governor George Natembeya’s directive to verify and regularize casual positions within the department.
According to CEC Health Dr. Joseph Wanajala Pepelah, the head count is crucial in accurately determining the status of casual workers who have been serving on a temporary basis.
The health department currently employs over 490 casual workers, making it challenging to track their numbers during routine facility visits.
The verification process will involve the Public Service Board, Health Human Resource team, and the Public Service Management department. These bodies will scrutinize the documents of the casual workers.
Subsequently, suitability interviews will be conducted to assess their qualifications, following which formal appointment letters will be issued to designate their specific roles and responsibilities within the health sector.
Dr. Pepelah highlighted that while some casual workers may lack the necessary documentation, others possess relevant qualifications but were hired on a casual basis.
The government’s directive aims to address these discrepancies and streamline the health department’s workforce.
The head count exercise will be conducted on a sub-county basis, starting with Kiminini, which has the highest number of staff. Subsequently, the verification process will extend to other sub-counties, including Cherangani, Kwanza, Endebess, and Saboti, ensuring all workers have an opportunity to participate at nearby facilities.
The primary objective of this exercise is to rationalize the staff in both technical and support roles. By aligning workers’ skills and expertise with suitable positions, the health department aims to enhance service delivery in the sector.
Overall, the head count exercise undertaken by the Trans Nzoia County government’s health department is a significant step towards organizing and optimizing the workforce. This effort will contribute to improved service delivery and better utilization of resources in the healthcare sector.
The CEC was accompanied by head of human resource at the department of health Philip Kitio who applauded the effort by Governor George Natembeya’s administration in ensuring regularisation of the temporal staff in the department.
