Healthcare Tragedy Unveiled: Muteithania Hospital’s Illicit Operations Result in Loss of Lives
Mutheithania Nursing home and maternity has been closed down by Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council and Nairobi City County following death of a woman and several other reported cases under unclear circumstances.
Located in Kawangware, Dagoretti North Constituency, the hospital has been exposed for its illegal operations, leading to multiple fatalities and endangering the lives of patients seeking medical care.
Following public complaints and government intervention, it was discovered that Muteithania Hospital had been operating unlawfully, utilizing a license belonging to another facility.
The gravity of their illicit activities became evident during an inspection by the Nairobi County Government team, led by Chief Officer of Health Facilities, Mr. Geoffrey Mosiria, under the directives of Governor Johnson Sakaja.
During the investigation, interviews with hospital staff revealed alarming admissions of numerous medical errors that resulted in the tragic loss of patients’ lives.
Shockingly, the facility had been operating for over three decades with unqualified staff, further increasing the risks faced by patients seeking treatment.
Among the reported victims of this healthcare disaster are Maureen Achieng and Peris Muthoni. Their deaths, attributed to seeking medical care at Muteithania Hospital, have sparked outrage within the community and the services they seeked are still unclear.
Chief of Health Facilities, Geoffrey Mosiria, emphasized the government’s commitment to protecting citizens’ lives, stating, “We are not here to kill businesses. We have been entrusted with the lives of our citizens, and anything that endangers them must be dealt with decisively. Our government has pledged to ensure hospitals are well-equipped and staffed with qualified professionals to prevent such tragedies. It is deeply concerning that despite previous closures mandated by the authorities due to lack of proper licensing and failure to meet statutory requirements, Muteithania Hospital persisted in its operations.”
The government has taken swift action, closing down Muteithania Hospital to prevent further harm to patients. Ambulances were dispatched to transfer patients waiting for treatment to authorized hospitals, including Mbagathi, Mama Lucy, and Pumwani, ensuring continued care and safety.
The Chief Officer Health Facilities, alongside the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council (KMPDC), pointed out the importance of citizen support in identifying and reporting illegally operating clinics and hospitals, emphasizing the need for regular inspections to safeguard public health.
The owner of the hospital has been arrested and is being held at the Muthangari Police Station and the body was taken to city mortuary on claims that it was certain death. The police are investigating the matter.
