Impeachment Motion Against Deputy President Gachagua Gains Momentum
In a significant political development, Speaker Moses Wetang’ula has approved an impeachment motion against Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, following its tabling by Kibwezi West MP Mwengi Mutuse. The motion cites 11 grounds, which Wetang’ula affirmed meet the constitutional threshold for impeachment proceedings.
Among the allegations is a claim that Gachagua demanded payment from President William Ruto in exchange for securing votes from the Mount Kenya region. This charge has intensified scrutiny on Gachagua’s conduct and raised questions about his role within the administration.
In a defiant response, Deputy President Gachagua addressed journalists in Rift Valley, warning MPs supporting the impeachment to reconsider their stance. He emphasized, “I saw others saying that since 300 MPs have issued signatures supporting my impeachment motion, I should just resign. Why would I resign if I didn’t give myself this job?” His remarks underscore a commitment to contest the motion vigorously.
As the impeachment proceedings unfold, security concerns have been voiced by MPs. Notably, leaders Kimani Ichung’wah and Junet Mohamed have urged Speaker Wetangula to ensure that Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja guarantees the safety of the 291 MPs who have supported the motion. This call for security highlights the potentially contentious nature of the ongoing hearings in Parliament.
The situation remains fluid as the political landscape shifts in response to these developments, with all eyes now on the Parliament as it navigates this high-stakes impeachment process.
