Impeachment Motion Looms Over Deputy President Gachagua Amid Political Turmoil
In a dramatic turn of events two years into President William Ruto’s administration, Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua faces an impeachment motion backed by 233 members of Parliament. The accusations against Gachagua include undermining the government, financing prolonged protests by the Gen Z movement, and promoting tribal politics in the Mount Kenya region.
Majority Leader Kimani Ichung’wah confirmed the impending motion, stating that he has already signed it and plans to present it in Parliament on August 1st at 2 PM. Ichung’wah’s announcement has raised eyebrows, particularly as President Ruto has remained silent on the issue, despite his previous assurances to avoid intimidating his deputy.
In response to the allegations, Gachagua asserted that he is facing these challenges due to his commitment to truth and transparency. He expressed frustration, claiming that those aligned with President Ruto harbor animosity towards him. “I cannot move even an inch since the people of Kenya elected me as Deputy President alongside President Ruto,” he stated.
As the political landscape grows increasingly turbulent, all eyes will be on Parliament as the impeachment motion unfolds, potentially reshaping the dynamics within the ruling party and the broader Kenyan political scene.
