Iten County Referral Eye Unit is Set to Receive a Significant Boost
The Iten County Referral Eye Unit is set to receive a significant boost in its ability to provide quality eye care services to residents of Elgeyo Marakwet County, thanks to a generous donation from Operation Eyesight. The organization has provided the facility with a new slit lamp, a crucial piece of equipment for eye examinations.
This will enable the unit to conduct more comprehensive eye exams and detect vision problems early on, when they are most treatable.
In addition to the slit lamp, Operation Eyesight has also pledged to support the establishment of a self-sustaining optical shop within the unit. This will provide residents with access to affordable eyeglasses and other optical care products, which can be a major financial burden for many people.
Furthermore, Elgeyo Marakwet County is committed to training its Community Health Promoters (CHPs) to screen for vision impairment and refer patients to the Iten County Referral Eye Unit for further evaluation and treatment. This will help to ensure that even people in the most remote villages have access to the eye care they need.
These initiatives, along with other strategic investments planned by the county government, are expected to significantly reduce the prevalence of avoidable blindness in Elgeyo Marakwet.
This will not only improve the quality of life for many individuals, but it will also contribute to the overall economic development of the county by reducing the burden of blindness on families and communities.
