Kakamega Farmers Urged to Enhance Milk Production
Dairy farmers in Kakamega County have been implored to increase production of milk as the County prepares to operationalize her first Dairy Plant- the Kakamega County Dairy Plant- at Tumbeni in Malava Sub-County.
On Monday, H Governor Fernandes Barasa launched issuance of in-calf heifers dubbed “One Cow Initiative”, a programme that was initiated in the 2015/16 Financial Year to boost milk production in Kakamega County.
While addressing the residents, the Governor noted that construction of Malava Dairy Plant is on course, at 75 percent complete currently, and is expected to process 50,000 litres of milk per day once operational.
In addition, Governor Barasa stated, the County Government is also implementing the Smart Dairy Farms within the facility. The Smart farm will act as a nucleus for the factory as well as a training centre for dairy farmers and learners on best practices in the dairy value chains.
The County is targeting to establish a Smart farm in each Sub-County. Currently Matungu, Bukura, Likuyani and Malava Smart farms are up and running.
