Kenya Considers Future of Road Maintenance Levy Amid Consultations
Kenya is currently engaged in extensive consultations regarding the future of its Road Maintenance Levy Fund (RMLF), a critical source of revenue for road upkeep.
Silas Kinoti, Director General of the Kenya Urban Roads Authority (KURA), announced that discussions are ongoing with key stakeholders, including industrialists, motorists, and households, to determine whether the levy should be implemented or suspended.
The RMLF, a charge of Ksh18 per litre on both diesel and petrol, is collected from every litre of fuel purchased at the pump. The funds are designated for the maintenance and enhancement of the country’s road infrastructure. This levy plays a significant role in sustaining Kenya’s transportation network, which is essential for economic development.
The transport sector is a cornerstone of Kenya’s economy, contributing 6% to the Gross Domestic Product (GDP). With roads handling over 90% of the country’s freight and passenger traffic, their quality directly impacts Kenya’s socio-economic growth. The outcome of the ongoing consultations will determine the future of the RMLF and, by extension, the state of Kenya’s road infrastructure.
