Kenya launches new strategy to help urban poor cope with climate change

Cabinet Secretary for Lands Public Works Housing and Urban Development Zachariah Njeru has said that he is proud of the operationalization of the Building Climate Resilience for the Urban Poor (BCRUP)Strategy 2023-2030.

BCRUP champions the coordinated action required to reduce urban vulnerability to climate change impact and stop the advancing urban.

CS Njeru said the strategy is a commitment to ensure no one is left behind in the face of increasingly fragile urban ecosystems.

He spoke at the Kenyatta International Convention Center during a side event at the Africa Climate Summit where he invited H.E President William Samoei Ruto to officially launch the BCRUP strategy.

“Building Climate Resilience for the Urban Poor has the potential to be a beacon of hope, promising to transform the lives of the most vulnerable in our society with focus on cities and local governments,” said CS Njeru.

He noted that urbanization has the benefit of providing us with unprecedented economic growth, connectivity, access to information, and conveniences of modern living.

At the same time Principal Secretary for Housing and Urban Development Charles Hinga called upon the County Governments to work closely with the National Government in getting solutions that integrate climate resilience, poverty alleviation, and sustainable urban development.

“I call upon the County Governments to work together with the National Government to save our urban areas, let’s not allow it to die,” said Hinga.

BCRUP has two levels of reporting. At the Global Level, Kenya reports to the UN Secretary General’s Climate Action Team as the lead, and at the National level, the State Department for Housing and Urban Development as focal point, reports to the Presidency on progress towards the implementation of the initiative.

Present also during the launch were the Executive Director of UN-Habitat Maimunah Mohd Sharif, the Secretary General of United Cities
and Local Governments of Africa, Jean Pierre Elong Mbassi, Regional Manager, Africa Desk, Division of Country Programming, Green Climate Fund, Eduardo Freitas, Chairperson of the Council of Governors Ann Waiguru among other leaders.
