KENYA NEEDS GOOD NEIGHBOURLINES, RAILA URGES MUSEVENI
The ODM Party Leader, the Rt Hon Raila Odinga has urged Ugandan President, H.E Yoweri Kaguta Museveni to cultivate the culture of good neighbourliness to ensure seamless trade at the Busia and Malaba Border points.
Addressing an Azimio La Umoja Rally at Achunet Stadium Malaba, the Prime Minister between 2007-2013 noted several kilometres of traffic pile-up he witnessed in Malaba calls for urgent intervention to ensure faster clearance of transit trucks.
” President Museveni should act fast by ensuring that Non Tarrif Barriers that are hindering trade at the border are handled with speed to reduce the never ending traffic jam,” he said.
He added: “Under my presidency, I will push for the construction of a Container Terminal in Malaba that will see the Great Lakes region including Uganda collect their goods at the border point to decongest the Kenyan side of the border.”
Raila also took issue with Ugandan security personnel over continuous harassment of Kenyan fish exporters, their fish destined for the Democratic Republic of Congo impounded without any apparent reason.
” My Government will push for economic liberation that will ensure eradication of diseases, poverty and ignorance which have taken 58 years without being addressed.
” In order to eradicate ignorance, my Government will introduce universal nursery, primary, secondary, tertiary colleges and university education. We shall also offer loans to Micro Medium and Small Scale Enterprises with a grace period of seven years before the loan is repaid,” he said.
He went on:” Farmers will be assisted to better their agricultural production by offering subsidies on agricultural produce. Babacare will be introduced for vulnerable groups that cannot afford medical cover. Social Protection Fund will be introduced with a monthly stipend of Ksh.6000 to vulnerable groups.”
