In a significant move to address post-harvest losses and enhance food security, the Kenyan government has commenced the distribution of 100 grain dryers across the country, with the first consignment flagged off for the Rift Valley region. These dryers, capable of drying 14 tonnes of maize in just two hours, are expected to play a crucial role in safeguarding farmers’ crops and boosting their earnings.

Cabinet Secretary for Agriculture, Mithika Linturi, emphasized the importance of this initiative, highlighting its potential to minimize post-harvest losses and contribute to a more stable grain reserve for the nation. He encouraged maize farmers to actively participate in the ongoing registration exercise to benefit from government subsidy programs, including subsidized fertilizer, further strengthening food and nutrition security in Kenya.

“This is a major milestone in our efforts to support farmers and reduce post-harvest losses.” – Cabinet Secretary for Agriculture Mithika Linturi.

The distribution of grain dryers is accompanied by a range of initiatives aimed at supporting the agricultural sector. These include the government’s commitment to providing affordable drying services at NCPB depots and collaborating with private sector partners to expand access to grain drying technologies.

The government’s efforts to address post-harvest losses and enhance food security demonstrate a strong commitment to supporting the agricultural sector and improving the livelihoods of farmers across Kenya.
