Kenya Strengthens Regional Mining Ties with ICGLR
In a significant development for the mining sector, PS Mining Elijah Mwangi recently hosted a high-profile visit from H.E. Ambassador João Samuel Caholo, the Executive Secretary of the International Conference on the Great Lakes Region (ICGLR). The courtesy call provided an opportunity for in-depth consultations on strengthening regional collaborations to foster economic growth in the mining sector.
During their discussions, Mwangi and Ambassador Caholo explored strategies to leverage regional support for the advancement of Kenya’s mining industry. A focal point of the conversation was Kenya’s initiative to host the inaugural Great Lakes Region Mining and Investment Conference. This prestigious event aims to bolster Kenya’s standing as an emerging mining hub and present the Great Lakes region’s mineral potential to the global market.
“We appreciate ICGLR’s confidence in Kenya’s ability to host this landmark event,” said Mwangi. “This conference will not only elevate our national profile but also serve as a platform for showcasing regional mining opportunities.”
The meeting also highlighted ICGLR’s ongoing advocacy for mineral beneficiation and value addition. Both parties underscored the importance of regional cooperation in adopting a mineral certification system to combat cross-border smuggling, a move expected to enhance transparency and security in the mining sector.
Senior officials from the State Department for Mining and the Ministry of Foreign and Diaspora Affairs were present, reinforcing the collaborative spirit of the discussions.
As Kenya prepares for this transformative event, the partnership with ICGLR and other regional stakeholders marks a significant step towards revolutionizing the country’s mining sector and integrating it more fully into the regional and global economies.
