Kenyan Doctors’ Strike Continues as Talks Stall
Kenya’s health sector remains in crisis as the ongoing doctors’ strike enters its eighth day. The dispute centers on two key issues raised by the Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists and Dentists Union (KMPDU)
Doctors are protesting the government’s failure to post medical interns, critical for supporting patient care and alleviating workload as KMPDU claims the Ministry of Health has not fully adhered to the terms of the 2017 CBA, which outlines their working conditions and compensation.
Nakhumicha emphasized a court order directing doctors to end the strike and warned of potential job losses for noncompliance. She defended the government’s record, stating they’ve implemented the CBA “to the extent possible.”
Nakhumicha indicated the government may explore alternative solutions, hinting at the possibility of replacing striking doctors. While medical interns are planned for deployment next month, their qualifications differ from experienced doctors.
Nakhumicha highlighted ongoing talks with KMPDU and the National Treasury’s approval for intern postings in April. Additionally, she pledged to address outstanding dues as mandated by the court.
Nakhumicha’s statements suggest doctors haven’t fully engaged in negotiations. However, the doctors’ perspective is not directly included. It’s likely they maintain the government’s actions fall short of resolving their core concerns.
Nakhumicha urged doctors to return to the discussion table, emphasizing the need for “rational thinking” to solve the deadlock. A swift resolution is crucial to prevent further strain on Kenya’s healthcare system.
