KEPROBA and AFA-Coffee Directorate Collaborate to Boost Kenya’s Coffee Exports
In a significant move to enhance the international presence of Kenyan coffee, the Kenya Export Promotion and Branding Agency (KEPROBA) has signed a collaboration agreement with the Agriculture and Food Authority (AFA)-Coffee Directorate. This partnership aims to coordinate marketing efforts for Kenyan coffee in both emerging and established markets.
Kenya’s coffee exports have faced fluctuations since 2016, primarily due to reduced productivity linked to shrinking coffee-growing areas, rising production costs, and unpredictable weather. Currently, 97% of Kenyan coffee is exported as raw green beans, limiting revenue and reliance on traditional markets. However, recent trends indicate a recovery, with coffee production increasing from 34,511 Metric Tonnes (MT) in 2020/21 to 51,853 MT in 2021/2022.
KEPROBA’s CEO, Floice Mukabana, emphasized the importance of this collaboration, stating that it aims to address challenges related to capacity building and market access. “Kenya’s coffee is a symbol of our nation’s rich heritage and exceptional quality,” Mukabana noted. The collaboration seeks to empower local producers with the skills and knowledge necessary to thrive in the global market.
Dr. Bruno Linyiru, Director General of AFA, highlighted the need to promote both international and local coffee consumption. He pointed out that countries like Ethiopia and Colombia have ingrained coffee into their local culture, a practice he hopes to cultivate in Kenya.
The agreement outlines a strategy for joint marketing initiatives, including expos and trade fairs, and encourages collaboration with industry stakeholders. Key focus areas include market research, capacity building, and the development of a unified Kenyan coffee brand, aiming to create stronger market linkages for producers and exporters.
This partnership marks a crucial step towards revitalizing Kenya’s coffee sector, contributing to national development and economic transformation while celebrating the country’s rich coffee heritage.
