KEPSHA Welcomes Move By TSC to Hire More Teachers
The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) recently announced that it received an overwhelming 314,117 applications for 46,000 advertised teaching positions, highlighting a significant demand for educators in Kenya. TSC CEO Nancy Macharia reported these figures during her appearance before the Parliamentary Education Committee, indicating a strong interest in teaching roles across various levels.
Of the applications, 93,646 were for primary teacher positions, significantly surpassing the 6,000 roles available. Additionally, 144,177 applicants sought junior secondary school (JSS) positions against 39,550 posts, while 76,294 applied for the 450 secondary school positions advertised.
The National Chairman of the Kenya Primary Schools Heads Association (KEPSHA), Mr. Johnson Nzioka, praised the TSC’s initiative, emphasizing the urgent need to address the current teacher-student ratio. He noted that the quality of education is heavily influenced by this ratio, which, according to the Basic Education Statistical Booklet 2020, should ideally be 1:25 for pre-primary, 1:40 for primary, and 1:35 for secondary schools. However, many regions are struggling with ratios as high as 1:70.
Mr. Nzioka acknowledged the government’s commitment to tackling this challenge through increased hiring, stating that this move is vital for improving educational outcomes and ensuring that every learner receives the attention and support they need. As the demand for qualified teachers continues to grow, the TSC’s recruitment drive is seen as a positive step toward enhancing the quality of education across the country.
With these developments, KEPSHA remains hopeful that the new appointments will help bridge the gap in the teacher-student ratio, ultimately benefiting students and fostering a better learning environment.
