Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru Kamaotho is poised to step down from her role as Chairperson of the Council of Governors (CoG) after completing her two terms in office. Waiguru, who has led the CoG with a focus on advocating for county autonomy and resource allocation, will not be eligible for an extension under the council’s term limits.

As her tenure comes to a close, several prominent figures have emerged as potential successors. Among those seeking to replace her is Nyeri Governor Mutahi Kahiga, who has been an active member of the CoG and is known for his dedication to regional development.

Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja has also thrown his hat into the ring, gaining attention for his efforts to address urban challenges and enhance service delivery in the capital. Kajiado Governor Joseph Ole Lenku is another contender, recognized for his initiatives aimed at improving infrastructure and promoting sustainable development in his county. Additionally, Wajir Governor Ahmed Abdullahi is seen as a strong advocate for the northern region and is focused on advancing issues pertinent to his constituents.

The upcoming leadership transition within the CoG is anticipated to be pivotal as governors seek to navigate pressing challenges facing counties, including budgetary constraints and the need for increased devolution. As Waiguru prepares to hand over the reins, her tenure is marked by significant strides in advocating for county interests at the national level, and her leadership will be remembered as a key period for the Council of Governors. The election of her successor is expected to take place in the coming weeks, setting the stage for new leadership to guide the CoG into its next chapter.
