KNUT Chair:Reforms Should Be Gradual
The National Chairman of the Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) Mr. Patrick Karinga Munuhe has taken a moment to share with us some of his insights on the proposed changes in the education system.
Mr. Karinga, who from the onset declared his full support for the reforms, suggested that their implementation should be gradual whilst taking into account the views and opinions of all the stakeholders.
“The union has learned of the employer’s announcement with shock to the effect of calling for the discrediting of the P1 Certificate. The teachers who are yet to be employed are a worried lot after the Teachers Service Commission announced the annulment of the P1 certificate, ”
He said to dump someone’s certificate and say it’s useless, is very demeaning to that person, more so bearing in mind that he or she struggled to get it.
“This should be given time and to be implemented gradually. Most of the teachers haven’t had a chance to further their education to acquire a diploma certificate. For that particular teacher to be able to further his education, let him/her be considered with a bursary so that he has a chance to go back to school, ”
He said the teacher should also be empowered so that he or she can advance in her career.
“Let us get the reason behind why the teacher did not get a chance to further the education and yet we are saying that we don’t have enough teachers.We are calling upon the Teachers Service Commission to rethink that directive, ‘
