Lusaka pledges transformation in the Agriculture Sector

Governor Kenneth Lusaka has committed to ensuring there is an immediate transformation in the Agriculture sector in his capacity as the Chair, Agriculture Committee Council of Governors.

“There’s need for us to be appraised on sector issues and discuss the emerging issues that need our urgent attention.Our major focus is on value chains and building of local farmers. This will go along way in mitigating the hunger crisis in the Country for the common good of our people”, Said Lusaka.

In his address, during the induction of the CECMs and Chief Officers in charge of Agriculture, Livestock and Cooperatives at Sarova WhiteSands, Mombasa County, Governor Lusaka further emphasized on the need to have a transformational agriculture sector governance that will create a strong and focused caucuses of CECM and Chief Officers at County levels to meet the objectives and purpose of devolution as envisaged, for the Common good of Kenyans.

“Your roles are anchored and recognized in the Kenyan Constitution. You have been bestowed upon the power and duty to deliver to the citizens of this Country and to ensure that Devolution works”,He stated.

The Country COG Chair Agriculture pointed out that devolution plays a central role of ensuring effective service delivery, while calling for a continuous engagement with the Ministries of Agriculture and Livestock Development and Mining, Blue Economy and Maritime Affairs on matters policy, legislation and standards in the sector.

“This cooperative relationship doesn’t mean that the other level of government is supervisor to the other.The respect of functions and institutional integrity of either level of government is paramount and must be respected at all times”, He Said.

The COG Agriculture Chair announced that the Country wide farmers registration exercise is still ongoing and urged farmers to come out in large numbers and register in order to benefit from the National Government’s subsidy programs,adding that the privatization of Sugar and Coffee factories from the previous leadership is also on course.

The meeting was graced by Cabinet Secretary, Mining, Blue Economy and Maritime Affairs, Hon.Salim Mvurya, PS Ministry of Blue Economy and Fisheries,Ms.Betsy Njagi, Representatives from the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock, President ,World Bank Vinnay Vitukru, Development partners among other invited guests.
