Marakwet West MP Wants National Treasury Establishes the Fund For Cancer

Marakwet West Mp Timothy Kipchumba has hatched a brilliant idea of addressing the cancer burden which has continued to overwhelm Kenyans everywhere.

His vision is to establish a National Cancer Prevention and Control Fund.

Official statistics indicate that cancer is the third highest cause of morbidity in Kenya (7 percent of deaths per year), after infectious diseases and cardiovascular diseases.

In a Motion tabled in Parliament, Kipchumba wants the National Assembly to resolve that the Government through the National Treasury, establishes the fund to ease the burden of the disease on Kenyans.

To highlight the seriousness of the matter, The National Assembly on Wednesday 23rd August 2023, addressed the paramount issue of the 𝐄𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐢𝐬𝐡𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐨𝐟 𝐚 𝐍𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐂𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞𝐫 𝐏𝐫𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐫𝐨𝐥 𝐅𝐮𝐧𝐝;

The Hon. Members approved the motion by Timothy Toroitich, that the Government through the National Treasury, establishes a National Cancer Prevention and Control Fund to promote prevention, control, and treatment of cancer in the country.

The Mover of the motion pointed out that the Cancer Prevention and Control Act, 2012 seeks to promote access to quality and affordable diagnostic and treatment services for persons with cancer but said the fund would go a long way in addressing the problem.

Health is a Right

Article 42(1)(a) of the Constitution provides for the right of every person to access the highest attainable standard of health, which includes the right to health care services.
