Matayos Soccer Teams Benefit From Uniforms
Three soccer teams from Matayos Constituency have benefitted from uniforms donated by a Nairobi-based lawyer and academician Joshua Wabwire.
The recipients of football kits worth Ksh100,000 include Mabale FC, Uprising, and Nasewa United, Wabwire said, adding that Mabunge United, Hillside Rovers, Muungano and Lung’a United are the next set of beneficiaries.
“The initiative seeks to support all teams in Matayos Constituency with kits by the end of the year to facilitate their participation in various cadres of the league,” Wabwire said.
Meanwhile, the annual Joshua Wabwire Cup soccer tournament will start in September 2023, and it will feature male and ladies teams, the sponsor has revealed.
The league, which has been played annually for the last two years, will now be expanded to include all teams in Matayos Constituency. Wabwire said this year’s league will also include women teams.
In last year’s series, Lung’a United beat Nasewa United to emerge champions. The winners received a trophy, a set of uniforms, and Ksh 20,000. Runners up Nasewa received uniforms and Ksh. 15,000, third-placed Matayos Legends got uniforms and Ksh. 10,000.
Fourth placed Labour FC received uniforms and Ksh. 5,000 with 12 other participating teams receiving Ksh 2,000 each. Wabwire disclosed
that it will be an annual event.
The aim of the tournament is to promote the growth of sports and to provide the youth with opportunities to nurture and develop their talents.
“This is a neutral and non-political initiative. Our focus is on helping our youths to build their talents. There are many talents within our communities that have not been tapped. Our mission is to provide an opportunity to expose them,” Mr. Wabwire said.
He added: “Our youths need to be engaged meaningfully, to prevent them from resorting to crime and other social ills, especially in the current difficult economic situations, ” Mr. Wabwire added.
