Media Council of Kenya Demands Action from IPOA After Journalist’s Shooting Incident
The Media Council of Kenya (MCK) has sharply criticized the Independent Police Oversight Authority (IPOA) over its handling of a recent violent incident involving Catherine Wanjeri, a journalist for MediaMax’s Kameme TV. The MCK is urging IPOA to take immediate and effective action against the police officers responsible for the attack.
In a statement issued earlier today, the MCK condemned the shooting of Wanjeri, which occurred in Nakuru while she was visibly identified as a journalist and accompanied by other reporters and police officers. The Council described the attack as “shameful and terrifying,” emphasizing that such acts undermine press freedom and threaten journalists’ safety.
“The shooting of Catherine Wanjeri Kariuki is a serious breach of media freedom and a direct attack on the role of journalists in our society,” the MCK’s statement read. “It is both shocking and unacceptable that a journalist, while performing her duties, was subjected to such violence.”
The MCK commended Wanjeri’s colleagues for their swift actions to assist her during the incident and called on IPOA to conduct a thorough investigation into the matter. The Council also urged IPOA to hold the responsible officers accountable to prevent further acts of violence against journalists.
“Journalists are essential to a functioning democracy, as they inform the public and hold powerful entities accountable,” the statement continued. “The Constitution guarantees their right to perform their duties without fear of violence or reprisal, and it is the responsibility of law enforcement agencies to uphold these protections.”
The Media Council’s call for action comes amid growing concerns over the safety of journalists in Kenya. This incident has intensified demands for stronger safeguards for media professionals who often work in challenging environments.
As of now, IPOA has not publicly responded to the MCK’s call for action. However, the pressure from the Media Council reflects a broader push from the media community and civil society for greater respect for journalistic freedom and safety.
