The Medium Liquor Traders Association MELTA (MELTA) has publicly declared its steadfast support for the Performing and Audio Visual Rights Society of Kenya (PAVRISK), underscoring its commitment to ensuring that local artists and content creators receive their due compensation.

In a recent statement, MELTA emphasized its dedication to protecting the rights of artists and upholding the integrity of the creative industry. The association, which represents numerous small and medium liquor traders, acknowledged the significant contributions of local artists to Kenya’s cultural heritage and expressed its commitment to supporting PAVRISK’s efforts in this regard.

The association has also requested formal clarification from the Kenya Copyright Board (KECOBO) concerning the activities of other Collective Management Organizations (CMOs) that are reportedly collecting royalties beyond those affiliated with PAVRISK. MELTA argues that understanding the full landscape of royalty collection is crucial for ensuring transparency and compliance with regulatory requirements.

“MELTA believes it is essential for all stakeholders, including our members, to be informed about the legally appointed CMO for regulatory purposes,” said Francis Mbogo, a representative of MELTA. “This clarity will help us ensure that royalty collection remains transparent and just.”

The association extended an invitation to artists, content creators, and government agencies to engage in constructive discussions aimed at resolving industry challenges and improving compensation mechanisms for artists. MELTA encouraged its members to subscribe to PAVRISK’s services, highlighting the benefits of the current discounted rates as a means of supporting artists and complying with legal requirements.

MELTA’s initiative reflects a broader commitment to fostering a compliant and respectful culture within the creative economy. By working in collaboration with PAVRISK and other relevant stakeholders, MELTA aims to contribute to a thriving creative sector that benefits both artists and the wider community.

As the situation evolves, MELTA remains focused on its mission to support the creative industry and ensure that the voices of all parties are heard in the ongoing dialogue about artist compensation and rights protection.
