Student leaders from Moi University Annex Campus now want the Ministry of Education to disburse Higher Education Loans Board (HELB).
Speaking to the press in Eldoret town, Erick Kepha Opas, the chairperson of Moi University and the secretary for Kenya Universities Students Association (KUSA) said, there is a need for the government to disburse the funds with immediate effect.

“We are calling upon the Ministry of Education and the HELB loans Board to fasten disbursement of HELB loans to allow students to pay their fees on time and meet their daily needs including payments of rent. We approximately have two weeks before the exams commence, failure of fee clearance will mean no exams. Therefore, we call upon the relevant bodies to look into this matter with immediate effect.” said Kepha.
Opas further said that tertiary institutions students will in no way support the Ministry of education’s proposal that the government will not fund universities and instead should look at ways to raise their own funds.

“We have 600,000 students in 100,000 tertiary institutions that are an entire electorate. We are all against the proposal by CS Education Ezekiel Mochogu that the government will stop funding tertiary institutions. His idea will automatically interfere with our studies. The government is supposed to support us even more, but on the contrary, shunning its duties. We will not accept this at all cost.” Echoed Kepha.
Manasseh Kasima , an economics student at Moi Annex Campus said, the struggle to keep going in the semester is a nightmare every student would want to wake up from.
“HELB disbursement usually delays until the end of the semester. From the time the semester begins, comrades’ needs begin. The majority of the students sleep hungry and struggle to pay their rent among other daily expenses. The government promised to support youths, needless to say, the majority of the youths are students. Government support should start with early allocation and disbursement of HELB loans. We also call upon the chief comrade Babu Owino, not to relent on fighting for the interests of all comrades in the country.” said Kasima.
They further threatened to go on a demonstration upon failure of HELB disbursement in the next 24 hours.
