MTRH Commemorates World Day Of Remembrance for Road Traffic Crash Victims, 2022

Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH) joined other Kenyans and stakeholders in commemorating World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Crash Victims, observed annually every 3rd Sunday of November.

This year’s theme is Justice : ‘Remember, Support and Act’.

The day is observed to remind road users on adherence of road safety principles thereby reducing deaths and injuries through traffic accidents on our roads.

MTRH is committed to supporting the UN Decade of Action for Road Safety target of reducing road traffic mortality and injuries by 50 % in 2030.

Apart from participating in public awareness on road safety in Eldoret Town on 21st November, 2022 together with other stakeholders led by the National Transport & Safety Authority (NTSA), the Hospital Management extended the Remembrance Day to 20th November, 2022 by lighting candles to remember those who have been lost through road traffic accidents, cutting of cake to appreciate the role of the Emergency team who provide lifesaving care, most often going through trauma themselves and care team who provide clinical care through the recuperation process in the Hospital wards.

Further, to support victims severely impacted by road accidents, the CEO, Dr. Wilson K. Aruasa, MBS, EBS through partnership with Humanity Kenya First Foundation, donated wheelchairs to deserving patients still undergoing treatment and who will require wheelchairs upon discharge.

The CEO thanked Humanity First Kenya for the wheelchair donations and all the staff especially the Emergency, Surgical and Theatre teams who play a vital role in delivery of quality services to patients.

He tasked the Emergency department to come up a Pre-Hospital team which will have a role in Emergency/ Accident site triage, First Aid to sustain Life and supervising Safe Patients transport to Hospital, consequently saving more lives.

He committed more support towards training of health care team in emergency medicine and development of emergency medicine curriculum at MTRH College of Medicine and
the Emergency Medicine residency curriculum drafting to be led by Dr. Jitendra and Dr. Simiyu of the MTRH ED.

The CEO reminded staff road safety is individual responsibility and that road safety “begins with you and me”, citing the basic Road Safety advice of always slow down/stop, allow pedestrians and other road users to pass.
