For years residents in Vihiga Sub County’s hopes of receiving piped water remained a pipe dream until today when Vihiga governor Hon. Dr. Wilber Khasilwa Ottichilo officially opened Buhani water project in Mungoma ward.

Launched under the Climate Change investment initiatives, the project is connected to 50 homesteads in the first phase, with plans underway to increase the number of households in the subsequent phases.

Addressing the area residents, governor Ottichilo reminded them to re-elect him owing to his sterling performance in development matters.
“The last time I was here I promised to construct a water project here and I have delivered.’’ Remarked the county boss.

On his part, the Environment and Climate Change Chief Officer Dr. Richard Boiyo thanked the community for their cooperation during the implementation of the project and urged them to protect the water project for their good.

The Buhani community water project will provide water for various households as well as for irrigation. The project couldn’t have come at a better time when the locals are in dire need of water for their horticultural practices.

Buhani conservation group is one of the beneficiaries of the project, which has supplied enough piped water to their indigenous vegetables firm for irrigation.

The department of Environment and Climate Change established a legal framework for fighting climate change, among them the County Climate Change Act, which empowers it to engage with ‘common mwananchi’ on establishing and practising mitigation practices in fighting climate change.

Today’s event comes at a better time when various families are lacking food due to the change in weather patterns. With the Buhani community having water for irrigation and domestic use, it can be a champion of food security due to the availability of water for irrigation.

The 105,000-litre tank constructed in the rocky hills of North Maragoli enables this.

This is the third climate change investment initiative, with the county government targeting to open two more pilot investment initiatives in two more wards before rolling out the program to all the wards.

Worth to note is that Governor Ottichilo is the chair of the climate change committee at the Council of Governors.

Also present at the function were Wilberforce Kitiezo (Ottichilo’s running mate), James Otari (Chief of Staff), Dominic Luvavo (Chief Officer, Agriculture), Winston Atamba (Director, Climate Change) Hudson Mwashi (Vihiga Sub County Admin.), Clement Aderi (Mungoma ward Admin), Janet Fundi (Public Relations Officer) to mention but a few.
