The Nandi Satellite Transfusion Center has been ranked top in the North Rift region for being the best collection satellite. Nandi was recognized for her exemplary efforts in enacting county policy, governance, regulatory frameworks, quality and management systems in blood transfusion services. This was during the 1st Kenya Blood Transfusion and Transplant Services Conference in Kenya and the African region. The conference was held at the Windsor Golf Hotel & Country Club, Nairobi County.

Nandi County Blood Transfusion Services managed to meet the monthly target of blood needs of 500 units of blood per month under the full support of the County Government of Nandi. This was achieved through adoption of innovative ideas and strategies such as the use of media to raise awareness and mobilize blood donors. The County also instituted cross-cutting incentive system to attract and retain voluntary, nonremunerated blood donors.

The County Government of Nandi has also increased the number of blood transfusion satellite centers from two to four.

Blood donors play a vital role in the healthcare of patients. With every blood donation, you are providing strength, hope and courage to patients and their families in your local hospitals. There is an increased need for blood and blood components in Nandi to meet continuous demand owing to the establishment of four theatres.

Through the Nandi satellite facility, the county has managed to prepare blood product components such as packed red cells and fresh frozen plasma which has tremendously reduced maternal, neonatal, oncology, renal and ICU deaths in our county transfusing hospitals.

The availability of a safe blood supply is a key component of transfusion medicine. Blood is vital for people with medical conditions or who are having surgery and also improve the quality of life for people whose illness has no cure.

The Kenya National Blood Transfusion Services convened the conference focusing on blood transfusion and organ transplant science and practice. This was the first and unique conference to be held in the African region aimed at creating a dialogue and a robust discourse in our region on policy, governance, regulatory frameworks, quality and management systems in blood transfusion and transplant services.

The conference provided an opportunity to engage and promote behaviour change and adaptation of a blood and organ donation culture that will be passed from generation to generation for a secure and self-sufficient health system for Kenyans and the region.

It also provided a platform for private-public and strategic partnerships to spur technology transfer and medical care investments.

The County Government of Nandi will continue to transform blood transfusion services by improving on the infrastructure and purchasing of modern platelets preparation equipment
