Odinga Condemns Police Brutality During #Nanenane Protests, Urges for Justice
In a recent press statement, Kenyan opposition leader Raila Odinga has strongly condemned the excessive use of force by police officers during the #Nanenane protests, highlighting the unwarranted violence inflicted on journalists and peaceful protesters alike.
Odinga’s address underscored the alarming reports of arbitrary arrests, detentions, and excessive force used by the police, which he described as a severe violation of Kenyans’ constitutional rights. Among those targeted were journalists, including Larry Madowo of CNN, who were reportedly harassed despite their role in covering the demonstrations.
“It is with deep concern that I learned of the arbitrary arrests, detentions, and excessive use of force by police, leading to the harassment of peaceful protesters and journalists,” Odinga stated. He emphasized that press freedom is a cornerstone of democracy and should be protected at all costs.
The opposition figure called on Kenyans to remain united in their efforts to build a nation that respects the rule of law and human rights. He also demanded the immediate release of those unjustly detained and urged for a comprehensive investigation into the actions of the involved officers.
“I want to make it clear that I stand with Kenyans in their quest for justice, freedom, and the full realization of their rights. I also call for the immediate release of those who were unjustly detained and a thorough investigation into the officers involved,” Odinga said.
Odinga’s statement reflects a broader call for accountability and respect for democratic values amid ongoing tensions and protests in Kenya.
