One Miner Killed, Another Injured in Kakamega Gold Mine Collapse
One miner died while another was seriously injured in Lirhembe village, Ikolomani, Kakamega county after a gold mining site collapse.
The injured miner was taken to the hospital in a critical condition after the incident. They were working in the mine when the walls fell down and trapped them about 200 feet inside the tunnel.
The person who died was named Moses Latiko, 25 years old. The police found his body and took it to the mortuary. This happened after a similar accident in Manyatta village where three miners died, and two got hurt. Last week, another miner died at a gold mine in West Pokot.
These accidents show how risky mining can be, especially for small-scale miners in this area. Officials say it’s important for miners to stop working until experts from the National Environmental Management Authority check the area for safety. They also need to get permission from the government before they start again and not use heavy machines that can make the site dangerous.
Even though the government has said not to mine during certain times, many miners still do because they need the money. But steps are being taken to make mining safer and prevent accidents like these from happening again.
