President Kenyatta Increases Kenyans minimum wage by 12 percent

President Uhuru Kenyatta has increased Kenya’s minimum wage by 12 percent.

Speaking during the Labour day celebrations at Nayo stadium, President Kenyatta said it will be effective from 1st May 2022.

“The decision is aimed at cushioning the country’s workforce against the rising cost of living ocassioned by several external economic factors,” he said.

President Kenyatta also revisited the various measures taken by the Government to cushion Kenyans from the negative economic impacts of Covid-19, and regretted that the ongoing geopolitical conflict in eastern Europe involving Russia and Ukraine was slowing down the global economy’s recovery from the pandemic.

“I am directing the Labour and Social Protection CS Simon Chelugui to immediately gazette COTU’s representative on the NSSF Board of Trustees with immediate effect,” he added.

On the cost of fuel, President Kenyatta said the country’s fuel subsidy programme had ensured that Kenya maintained among the lowest pump prices in the world, and cautioned oil marketers against hoarding petroleum products.

COTU Secretary-General Francis Atwoli, Labour and Social Protection CS Simon Chelugui and Federation of Kenyan Employers (FKE) Executive Director Jaqueline Mugo also spoke at the event that was attended by Nairobi Governor Anne Kananu among other senior Government and labour movement officials.
