In response to mounting pressure from Gen Z protestors demanding government reforms, President William Ruto announced significant changes aimed at addressing youth concerns during a press briefing at State House Nairobi today.

Key among the reforms is the abolishment of several governmental positions that have been criticized for their perceived extravagance. President Ruto stated, “The operations of the office of the first lady, second lady, and the wife of the prime cabinet will be removed.” This move follows widespread criticism from youth groups, opposition parties, and government critics regarding excessive government spending.

In a bid to streamline government operations and reduce expenditure, President Ruto further declared the suspension of Cabinet Administration Secretaries appointments. “The decision to fill the position of Cabinet Administration Secretaries is hereby suspended,” he affirmed. Additionally, he announced a 50% reduction in the number of advisors within the public service effective immediately.

Concerns over the misuse of taxpayer funds on unnecessary travel expenses and contributions to Harambee initiatives prompted further austerity measures. “In keeping up with the austerity measures we promised, 47 State corporations with overlapping and duplicating functions will be dissolved,” President Ruto explained. Employees affected by these closures will be transferred to other ministries to ensure continuity in service delivery.

The announcement comes after President Ruto engaged with Gen Z representatives on the X Space platform, where he committed to implementing reforms within the government. The move is seen as a significant step towards addressing youth grievances and enhancing transparency and efficiency in governance.

As the country navigates its recovery phase, expectations are high that these reforms will lead to tangible improvements in government operations and financial accountability. President Ruto’s promises during the press briefing signal a proactive approach to addressing public concerns and fostering a more responsive government.
