President William Ruto’s recent engagement with Kenyan youths via X-Space has garnered mixed reactions from government officials, with many commending the initiative for fostering direct dialogue.

The meeting, which followed weeks of youth protests urging the president to address them directly, provided a platform for young Kenyans to pose questions and demand immediate responses from the president.

Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua expressed his approval of the initiative, emphasizing the importance of such conversations. “What the President did in engaging Gen Z on X-Space was a positive step. It was a constructive conversation, and I listened in—it was very effective,” stated the Deputy President during a speech in Kirinyanga. He applauded the youth for their dedication to improving Kenya, acknowledging every Kenyan’s right to contribute to the nation’s welfare.

Meanwhile, Prime Cabinet Secretary and CS for Foreign Affairs Musalia Mudavadi underscored the significance of digital platforms in crisis resolution and citizen engagement. “The digital age necessitates governments to swiftly adapt to citizens’ aspirations. We must innovate and proactively engage to meet the evolving expectations of our youth,” remarked Mudavadi, who leads the Aman National Congress party.

The X-Space meeting marks a notable shift towards leveraging digital spaces for direct interaction between government leaders and citizens. Its success in facilitating open dialogue and addressing youth concerns has highlighted its potential as a tool for responsive governance in Kenya.

Critics, however, remain cautious, citing the need for tangible outcomes from such engagements and urging sustained efforts to address systemic issues affecting the youth.
