Public Investments Committee Summons Cabinet Secretary for Roads Over Infrastructure Issues
The National Assembly Public Investments Committee on Commercial Affairs and Energy has summoned Cabinet Secretary for Roads, Mr. Davis Chirchir, to provide clarity on pressing issues affecting road infrastructure nationwide. The session is scheduled for next Tuesday and will also include officials from the Kenya Roads Board.
During a meeting at Parliament Buildings, Committee Chairperson Hon. David Pkosing (South Pokot) emphasized the importance of transparency in road allocations and called for a detailed breakdown of funding per constituency. He expressed concern that the committee could not conduct a thorough audit of the Kenya Urban Roads Authority (KURA) without addressing broader infrastructure challenges.
“We cannot conduct an audit without addressing other pressing issues raised by Members,” Hon. Pkosing stated, insisting that all committee members be present to voice their concerns directly to the Cabinet Secretary.
The Chairperson criticized the current Budget Committee, reflecting on past integrity issues that led to the disbandment of a similar committee in the eleventh parliament. He underscored the necessity of addressing serious queries regarding road management agencies before proceeding with audits.
In his remarks, Hon. Pkosing highlighted the need to involve additional agencies, such as the Kenya Rural Roads Authority (KeRRA) and the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA), to comprehensively review pending bills and funding sources. He called for a complete set of statistics on all roads in the country, including a distribution map to clarify disparities in funding allocations between KURA and KeRRA.
The committee has formally invited Mr. Chirchir to ensure his attendance at the upcoming session, where key policy matters regarding road infrastructure will be discussed.
