RELIEF FOR BUNYALA WEST RESIDENTS AS BULEMIA WATER PROJECT IS COMMISSIONED
The County Government of Busia today commissioned the Sh7 million Bulemia Water Project after the rehabilitation and pipeline extension to herald a new dawn for area residents who had faced water scarcity.
Busia Deputy Governor, H.E Moses Mulomi commissioned phase one of the project at the Sinai intake and later two kiosks at Rudacho and Nandekere that saw residents turn up in large numbers to draw water that had remained elusive.
The Deputy Governor said the Governor, H.E Sospeter Ojaamong’s administration has set aside more funds for phase two of the project that will see further pipeline extensions to cover more villages in the area.
H.E Mulomi said phase one of the project which is already complete will benefit 3,500 residents with the number hitting 7,000 mark with the completion of the second phase.
The DG added: ” Water challenges in the area has been solved but the journey is not over. I thank the contractor, Cornel Bwire of Jenco Contractors for burning midnight oil to complete the pipeline extension and for his pledge to avail water at Lake View Nandekere Primary School.
He said there is need to increase the tank capacity from current 50 cubic metres to 100 cubic metres and pipeline extension to enable many areas receive water.
He cautioned residents who burn bricks along the pipeline noting that it would destroy the pipes that would lead to water shortage; You should take care of your wealth. Management team will be formed to look into water infrastructure.
Acting Water Executive, Dr Moses Osia thanked the contractor for increasing water pipeline from the initial 4.2km to 4.5km at his own cost, adding that the County Government of Busia has injected Sh46.5m towards water projects in Bunyala Sub County in the 2019/2020 and 2020/2021 Financial Years.
The scope of works included construction of lake intake structure, installation of solar hybrid pumping system, rehabilitation of 2 inch rising and falling mains and repair of 50 cubic metres masonry storage tank.
Others were rehabilitation of pump house, repair of water kiosks and rehabilitation/laying of distribution networks to serve Rudacho, Bulemia market, Eramba Masaka, Mundekwe and Bubango and Budiera.
The water demand in the area per day is 490 cubic metres but the expected supply is 64 cubic metres per day. The deficit will be supplemented by by Port Victoria Water Supply pending improvement of Bulemia Supply.
The expected improvements include increase pumping hours through facilitation of connection to the national grid, expand pumping, conveyance, storage and distribution capaxities and proper management ensuring minimal Unaccounted-for-Water.
The public participation held on 16th November, 2021 at Sinai proposed direct management of the water project to be the sole mandate of the County Government of Busia theough the Department of Water.
