Rough Political Terrain as Ruto’s Administration Hits Two Years in Office
As President William Ruto and Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua marked their second year in office on September 13, 2024, their administration has navigated a turbulent political landscape. The transition from Uhuru Kenyatta’s presidency in September 2022, witnessed by over 20 African heads of state, promised a new era for Kenya, but the journey has been fraught with challenges.
Upon taking office, Ruto faced immediate economic pressures. He abandoned the previous administration’s flour subsidies in favor of boosting production, a move that drew criticism from many Kenyans who viewed it as a betrayal of his promises.
The early part of 2023 was marked by significant unrest. On February 22, Raila Odinga, the then opposition leader, spearheaded mass protests against Ruto’s administration. These demonstrations, which spanned several months, led to widespread police brutality and economic disruptions. The crisis attracted international condemnation and only ended after former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo mediated a resolution.
The situation further deteriorated with the Shakahola massacre, where Pastor Mackenzie allegedly starved over 400 followers to death. The incident demanded immediate governmental accountability and heightened scrutiny of Ruto’s administration.
Tragedy struck again with the loss of nine soldiers in a military helicopter crash, including Chief of Defence Forces General Francis Omondi Ogola. The circumstances surrounding the crash remain under investigation, deepening public concern and speculation.
The introduction of the controversial Finance Bill 2024 sparked intense protests, particularly among young Kenyans. The demonstrations escalated when protesters stormed the parliament building, leading to severe clashes. The international community closely watched as the bill was eventually withdrawn, and Ruto’s cabinet faced significant criticism. The subsequent reshuffle and reinstatement of some ministers generated further public outcry.
Additionally, the discovery of bodies at the Kware dumpsite has intensified calls for governmental accountability and transparency. As Kenya reflects on Ruto’s two-year tenure, it remains clear that his administration continues to grapple with profound political and social challenges.
