Senate Drama Unfolds as Deputy President Gachagua Faces Impeachment Hearing
In a dramatic turn of events, Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua’s impeachment proceedings took a significant hit yesterday during a Senate session that saw Mwingi Mutusi, the Kibwezi West MP, present compelling witness testimony against him. The proceedings escalated as Gachagua’s legal team, led by Elisha Ongoya, faced tough questioning, underscoring the mounting pressure on the Deputy President.
In a separate development, the Senate dismissed Gachagua’s petition to block James Orengo from representing the National Assembly during the impeachment hearings. This decision further complicates Gachagua’s defense strategy as he confronts 11 charges, to which he has pleaded “not guilty.”
Initially, Gachagua was scheduled to appear for a two-hour defense session. However, his lawyer, Muite, announced that Gachagua was unable to attend due to health issues and had been hospitalized, raising concerns about the Deputy President’s ability to participate in the critical hearings.
As the session was underway, Senate Speaker Amason Kingi announced a suspension of the meeting, with plans to reconvene at 5 PM. Meanwhile, Dr. Andrew Mulwa, acting CEO of KEMSA, is set to provide crucial testimony, adding to the day’s high stakes.
With the Senate poised to vote on the impeachment motion, the political climate remains tense as Gachagua’s fate hangs in the balance.
