Senator Mandago Wants Strategic Food Reserve Re-Introduced
With the Country facing the worst drought and hunger in decades, Uasin Gishu County senator Jackson Mandago has urged the Ministry of Agriculture to revive the strategic food reserves.
Mandago castigated the previous regime for the failure of the strategic food reserves blaming them for the different galas of the national cereals and produce board in the country that have been empty for over six years now.
“These people demonstrating because of high food prices were the ones responsible for the prices going up. Why was the government removing funds meant for subsidies? Why was the government removing strategic food reserves? In this country there is a certain tomfoolery whereby instead of storing, you say you want to save on money,” said the former Uasin Gishu Governor.
“The reason for having the reserves was to have food whenever drought affected the nation. If you go to our food reserves there is no sight of food, not even the rats. Therefore, we call on the ministry of agriculture to ensure food strategic reserves are reestablished so that if there will be enough rain this year more food may be stored that will help us in the drought period.” Mandago added.
Mandago noted the purpose of constructing food galas in different parts of the country was to restore food that may be of help in the future when drought occurs and urged the nation to revert to this system.
“If the government could be having its supply at the moment, we could be supplying food to the areas with no food. The previous government in line with the handshake act facilitated the removal of the strategic food reserves and subsidy money meant for fertilizers, we don’t want leaders who make us live in a harsh economy condition which they caused.” The Uasin Gishu senator noted.
