Sh 200 Billion Set Aside For the Purchase of Cotton
Sh.200 billion has been set aside by the national government to purchase cotton from farmers in arid and semi-arid counties across the country.
Speaking to the press, Principal Secretary of the State Department of Industry, Dr. Juma Mukhwana said the cotton will go at Sh .270 per Kilogram.
“The government through the state department Industry has set aside Sh 200 billion to purchase cotton from farmers. I am calling upon farmers to take advantage of the rainy season and make use of their farms to grow cotton,” said Dr. Mukhwana.
The Ps State Department Industry said they had a conversation with the Council of governors and agreed to at least one ginnery in every county to promote the market for cotton.
“The ginneries will create more job opportunities for the youths from the respective counties and will fill the gap of unemployment among the youths,” he added.
The PS said there is a shortage of cotton where the Country imports 80 percent from India and other countries to help Rivatex East Africa Limited.
He applauded Rivatex East Africa Limited’s Management for reviving the industry and creating job opportunities for over 1000 youths.
“The National government set aside Ksh.7 million to revive Rivatex East Africa Limited which has created more job opportunities for thousands of youths thus reducing the unemployment rate in the Country,” said Dr. Mukhwana.
In the next 5 years, Dr. Mukhwana said the State Department Industry in Corporation with the National Government and other private sectors is looking forward to employing 500,000 youth and generating at least 500 billion from the exports of fabrics and clothing.
Mukhwana said that the state department industry is looking forward to make 100,000 acres of land into use to help in the production of cotton.
He further said the County Government of Uasin Gishu has promised to provide land for the socks factory which will use materials from Rivatex East Africa Limited,a project which is aimed at employing 3000 youths.
