Shujaa Relegated From the HSBC World Series

The weekend has been full of rugby action from the Africa Women’s Cup in Madagascar, the Mzansi challenge in Kenya, and the World Rugby qualifiers in London.

Saturday was a winning day as the Kenya Lioness won their first division match against Madagascar with a 29-20 lead, Shujaa won their first playoff game with a 24-19 against Canada and the Simbas also won their Mzansi Challenge with a 48-7 against Zimbabwe in their first division of the Currie Cup.

The London 7s tournament featured the 2024 qualifiers where Kenya played the finals but lost 7-12 to Canada and were relegated from the World Rugby Sevens Series.

Despite winning all their Saturday games against Canada and Tonga, they were held by the Canadian team at the final stage of the tournament and blowing off the Shujaa’s candle to participate in the 2024 series.
The relegation holds a black cloud on Shujaa as they may lose the 3-year sponsorship deal they made with Sportpesa in December as they are no longer taking part in the HSBC World Series.

The only way for Shujaas to be promoted back to the series is to ensure they are the Winners of the Africa 7s and in case South Africa wins, they have to come third, head for a two-weekend challenger tournament against the 12 teams from around the world in April 2024 and ensure they win.
