Sixty percent of the police officers countrywide have undergone sensitization and training in preparation of the upcoming August elections.
The ongoing sensitization of the police officers happens as the country counts thirty four days to the general elections.
The National Police Service (NPS) in partnership with Independent Electoral Board Commission (IEBC), Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA), National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC),has enlightened the police officers on how to report matters associated with gender based violence (GBV).
Led by Domnic Kisavi, head of national police service security Secretariat, the sensitization programme has encouraged engagement and participation of the publics to ensure secure environment during elections.
“The national police service aims at training seventy five percent police officers before the mega elections.”Said Kisavi
He also encouraged the police officers to observe the code of conduct by maintaining respect and dignity through upholding human rights of every citizen.
“I urge the police officers to bring publics closer through initiating participation and engagement with the office of the registrar of political parties (ORPP), church leaders and youths.”Said Kisavi
Kisavi identified hate speech and incitement among politicians as the potential triggers of violence in Uasin Gishu County back in 2007 and 2017 ,however the national police service has currently made an effort to engage publics in promotion of peace and unity.
“The National Police Service is now certained of ending election related violence among the citizens and politicians through emphasizing on public engagement and participation.”Said Kisavi
This happens after Uasin Gishu County being tagged among hotspot regions in the country which are likely to be chaotic before, during and after elections.
