Some MPs Reject Gachagua’s Impeachment Motion, Citing Concerns Over Intent
A faction of lawmakers within the Kenya Kwanza coalition has publicly distanced itself from the impeachment motion against Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, which was tabled earlier this week. The dissenting voices have taken to social media to express their opposition, highlighting concerns over the motivations behind the motion.
Marakwet West MP Timothy Kipchumba took to his X account to firmly oppose the motion, likening the situation to “a hyena accusing its baby of smelling like a goat.” He stated, “My conscience is against the letter, the spirit, and the intent of the impeachment motion. Let history record that I, Timothy Kipchumba Toroitich, NEVER supported the impeachment of the Deputy President.”
Similarly, Nyali MP Mohammed Ali expressed his disapproval, arguing that the move to impeach Gachagua amounts to an unjust attack on a public servant. “I have carefully read the charges in the impeachment motion against Deputy President H.E. Rigathi Gachagua, EGH. In good faith, I do not support this cause of action and find it ill-intentioned, seeking to demonize a Public Servant who has contributed immensely to this great country,” Ali stated.
As the political landscape continues to shift, the responses from these MPs indicate a significant divide within the coalition, raising questions about the future of Gachagua’s political career and the implications of this impeachment motion.
