State Department for Correctional Services Launches Initiative for Male Inmates’ Beds
The State Department for Correctional Services is embarking on a new initiative aimed at providing beds for all male inmates across various correctional facilities. Principal Secretary Dr. Salome Beacco announced this plan during a recent visit to Kamiti Medium Prison, where she attended the commissioning of 25 inmates into the Catholic Men Association (CMA).
Dr. Beacco highlighted the “He for He” campaign, which will invite partners to adopt and fund the construction of double-decker beds. This effort aims to ensure that male inmates receive the same sleeping accommodations as their female counterparts, addressing the current disparities in prison conditions. All women’s prisons in the country have already achieved this standard.
Referencing Nelson Mandela’s principles on prisoner dignity, Dr. Beacco emphasized the importance of treating inmates with respect and value as human beings. She encouraged the CMA members to take the lead by sourcing materials for the beds, which will be built by inmates in prison workshops.
The commissioning ceremony was officiated by Father Peter Kimani, the Bishop-elect of Embu Catholic Diocese. Dr. Beacco also acknowledged the vital role of spiritual support in the reform process, which aims to enhance the mental health and overall wellness of both inmates and prison staff.
In her address, she underscored the department’s ongoing reforms, which include improved medical care, training for prison officers, and the automation of rehabilitation programs. Notably, 56 inmates are set to graduate with law degrees from the University of London, alongside another inmate earning a degree in medicine, in a ceremony scheduled for next month.
This initiative represents a significant step towards modernizing correctional facilities in the country and reinforcing the commitment to humane treatment within the prison system.
